Digital Earth Flood Event Explorer - The Climate Change Workflow

With the Climate Change workflow, we aim at supporting the analysis of climate-driven changes in flood-generating climate variables, such as precipitation or soil moisture, by using regional climate model simulations.

Making Long-Term Statements from Short-Term Snippets

A specific use case-question for our workflow could be: How does precipitation change over the course of the 21st century under different climate scenarios, compared to a 30-year reference period over a certain region? The workflow to answer this question comprises consistent and scientifically sound processing of large amounts of data from the Earth System Grid Federation (ESGF) data archive. Since it requires climate expert knowledge and data processing training to correctly process large ensembles of climate model simulations, we currently develop an interactive tool with predefined use options (the Climate Change Explorer) for this Climate Change Workflow, in collaboration with GFZ.

Using a web-based user interface, the user can define the region of interest, choose from several climate model data sets from the ESGF, and define time ranges. The current output is a standardized plot of the region’s precipitation change projected by the ensemble of selected climate model simulations for different Representative Concentration Pathways(RCPs). The plot includes the temporal evolution of precipitation change over the course of the 21st century and ensemble characteristics for two selected 30 year time periods for the mid and the end of the 21st century (e.g. median, minimum, maximum, and percentiles). With this tool, we aim to provide much easier access to simulated high-resolution precipitation data, and to support the visual exploration of the region’s projected precipitation change using standardised approaches.
