Why are we doing this?
Today’s research questions – especially when addressing the most significant, transdisciplinary research challenges – can only be answered by using a broad range of skills related to data. This includes common principles and practices of research data management, the use of a range of data platforms and infrastructures, data processing, large scale analysis, visualization techniques, software development and annotation and more.
This Digital Earth Summer School is designed to provide a real understanding of fundamental principles and methods of Data Science to enhance the quality of your research output. It offers training in essential skills of Data Science related to Earth Sciences by using a multidisciplinary approach that bridges science disciplines and Earth spheres.
The summer school is addressed to PhD candidates and Postdocs from Earth Sciences with a strong commitment to Data Science.
Key elements of the Summer School
The Summer School will be structured in four blocks:
I - Modern Research Data Management

The narrow winding road to data FAIRness
Hands- on Session on Elbe river flood scenarios: Data mining and data accessibility
FAIR Assessment approaches
II - Data flow / data processing chains: From the measurement to the final data sets

JOHANN-CHRISTOPH FREYTAG – Einstein Center Digital Future, GER
Lecture on Quality Assessment and quality control of environmental data
Hands- on Session on Introduction to O2A Dashboard

III - Potential of digital technology in Earth Sciences - Data handling - Methods for application of data

Furthermore, there will also be presentations of scientific applications with each thematic block.
- Prior knowledge of R or Python, experience with programming in general
- Participants will need to bring their own computer

- A one-page letter of motivation for participation

There are no participation fees. Accommodation and catering is organized and costs are covered by Digital Earth. Furthermore, Digital Earth provides travel grants of up to 200 Euro for arrivals within Europe, and up to 700 Euro for intercontinental arrivals.
